General Info
    Hours of Operations
The school is open from 7:30 AM until 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Children should not arrive earlier than ten minutes prior to morning classes or five minutes prior to afternoon classes. Pre-school hours are 8:30 AM to 11:45 AM and 1:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Dismissal times begin at 11:45 AM and 3:30 PM.
    Health Information
It is required that your child's health form be completed by a doctor and returned prior to admittance. The State of Virginia regulations prohibit any child who does not have a current medical form on file from being admitted to school. Your child's immunization records must be kept current by submitting validated proof as immunizations are received.
    Classroom Transitions
Transitions to older groups are usually scheduled twice yearly at the discretion of the Directress. You will be advised as to when your child can be expected to change classes. Some children will first make brief visits to the new classroom.
    Rest Time
Our younger children are required to nap or rest each afternoon after lunch for approximately two hours. Children who reach 5 years of ages prior to January 1st are scheduled in full day classes. Parents may request a nap time for these children. Children reaching 5 years old after January 1st may join full day classes if space is available. Available space will be filled in order of birth date.
    Classroom Visitation and Observation
You are invited to make short visits to the school at any time. One-way observation windows are provided for your benefit. If you would like to observe a class at length or enter a classroom, please schedule this with your child's teacher.
    Security Procedures
We must receive a written request with the person's full identification to release a child to someone other than a parent or legal guardian. The supervising staff will check identification.

Parents of all children must accompany their children into the building. They must deliver their child to a staff member either at the school entrance or their classroom door. Please do not drop off the child at school without ensuring their arrival.

If either parent wishes to place restrictions on the other parent's rights to pick up a child, we require a copy of the court documents referring to parental rights.

Children will not be allowed to walk home without parental permission or leave school grounds unsupervised.
    Emergency School Closings
Information regarding early closings because of power failure, heavy snow, or unforeseen circumstances will be reported to you by a staff member as soon as a decision has been met. A message on our answering machine will be used for unusual closings.
    Emergency Procedures
We will periodically schedule emergency drills. Practice drills are documented. Evacuation plans are posted in classrooms and other strategic areas of the school. The staff is informed or proper procedures.

In the event that the school is declared unsafe, all children will be evacuated to our emergency shelter. The staff will notify parents as soon as possible. A notice will be posted at the school with further information and the location of the emergency shelter.
    Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect
The law requires that we report any incident of suspected child abuse or neglect. We may be directed by the State's Child Protective Agency not to notify the parents of the report as part of our legal obligation.
    Cleaning and Sanitation
The children and staff keep our facility and classroom environment clean. Both the staff and the children engage in frequent hand washing to promote cleanliness. The staff disinfects changing tables after diapering, eating areas, cots, and classroom materials when necessary.
    Toilet Training
Children are accepted in our Infant and Toddler programs without regard to toilet training. You must supply diapers and wipers.

Toilet training is a cooperative endeavor between home and school and we will be happy to work with you when your child is ready. Training pants may be used at school when your child indicates an interest to use the bathroom.

    Injury
First aid will be administered if your child is injured while attending school. In an emergency situation, we will make every effort to contact you. If we cannot reach you, we will use the emergency numbers that you have provided. In the event that the injury is more than minor, we will make sure that your child receives the necessary treatment until we can reach you. An Emergency Authorization form is required to be signed at the time of enrollment.
    Illness
The school prohibits attendance of a child with a communicable illness. If your child becomes ill during the day, we will call you. Children with fevers of 100 degrees or more, contagious skin or eye infections, vomiting, or repeated diarrhea must be removed from school. Children sent home with a fever must be free of fever for at least 24 hours before returning to school, without the use of fever-reducing medication. They must also be free of the above symptoms for 24 hours.

Many diseases, such as strep infections, require that the child be excluded from school for 24 hours after treatment has been received.

Exclusion from school is based on the Virginia Public Health Department's Rules and Regulations.
    Medications
We will administer prescription medications to your child. Non-prescription medications will only be administered if accompanied by written instructions from the child's doctor. The school provides a medication form that is to be filled out by the parent.

The medication must be in its original container stating the child's name, dosage, date, and physician's name. Medication will be dispensed during noon hour. All medication will be kept out of reach of children and refrigerated, where required.

Unused medication will be discarded if left at the school for more than 5 days.
    Discipline
Children need consistent and age-appropriate limits. The Montessori environment provides the opportunity for the child to develop inner discipline and responsibility in a loving and secure environment.

Each classroom discusses and posts agreed upon ground rules, as well as those set by the teacher. Behavior not consistent with these rules will be stopped with a verbal reminder of the rule. In some cases, it will also be necessary to re-direct the child to choose an alternative material or classmate to work with. Working alone or sitting in a chair, within the classroom proper, is used for children who need time to gain control of their emotions and/or need time to observe role models among their classmates. The goal is for the child to recognize when he/she is ready to return to classroom activity.

In keeping with our general philosophy of respect for the child, abusive discipline such as physical and verbal abuse or the withholding of food is not permitted.
    Enrichment Programs
Our extracurricular activities are offered at various times during the year. These may include private music lessons, art classes, dance, and learning a second language. The types of programs may vary when different activities become available to us.

Details about our Enrichment Programs are available in the school offices. Most of the programs require an additional fee and, in some cases, may be payable directly to the instructor of the program.
    Clothing
Please dress your child appropriately for an active day. White indoor gym shoes are required. Children should bring a complete set of extra clothing and/or extra underwear and pants. All clothing should be clearly labeled with your child's name.
    Lost and Found
Lost and Found items are placed in the benches in the front entrance. Unclaimed items are given to charity on a regular basis. We will attempt to return items if they are marked with your child's name.
    Conferences
Conferences for children 2 years old and older are scheduled twice a year. Please respect the time allotted for your appointment.

Additional conferences may be set up at a mutually convenient time when either you or your child's teacher feel it necessary.

Please remember that class time is reserved for the children. This is not the time to discuss your child's progress.
    Meals
A light breakfast will be served until 7:30 AM to children who have not eaten.

A nutritious lunch will be served daily. Children are encouraged to eat a health variety of foods. Vegetarian lunches may also be requested. Other dietary restrictions may require that the child provide his/her own lunches.

Parents provide the daily snacks for one day each month. These are to be store bought and in unopened packages. Juices should be the unfrozen, concentrated, canned type.
    Birthdays and Holidays
Please consult with your child's teacher for suggested birthday and holiday treats.

We enjoy celebrating your child's birthday with a special line activity. Holidays will be celebrated with special activities or projects.

If you will be giving your child a party, we prefer that the party invitations be mailed. They will only be distributed at school if all class members are invited. Class address lists are available in the office.
